Whithin Week 17 of 2025, the RespiVirNet influenza surveillance system has concluded, marking a record-breaking season. According to the latest bulletin from the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità – ISS), an estimated 16.1 million cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) occurred in Italy during the 2024–2025 season—the highest number ever recorded in previous seasons.
In the final week of monitoring, the incidence rate stood at 3.7 cases per 1,000 patients, down from 4.9 the week before, with all Regions and Autonomous Provinces falling below the baseline threshold.
Among the respiratory viruses detected, in addition to influenza A and B, there were also Rhinoviruses, Metapneumoviruses, SARS-CoV-2, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Parainfluenza viruses, non-SARS-CoV-2 human Coronaviruses, and Bocavirus.
The ISS report also includes updates on genetic analyses and antiviral resistance of circulating influenza strains, confirming the critical role of integrated virological surveillance in monitoring the evolution and spread of respiratory viruses.
